As an 8 week old pup Surfer showed tremendous promise in the field. When taken to the line she would start looking for the guns, and when she saw them would sit (on her own) with her attention riveted. She was never wild or crazy, but quietly intense. She is the best natural marker I have had in Tollers. Most Tollers tend to be "area" markers; they get to the area, and start to hunt, as opposed to a pin point marker who runs directly to the bird without a hunt. Most female Tollers I have found mentally mature at a slower rate, and lack the early concentration. Early concentration is not just required in a competition dog. It allows the hunter (or any performance venue) to start serious work at a younger age. You do not want to have to wait until the retriever is two or three years old. Trainability at an early age is something I have been working on in my breeding program, so I was especially pleased that Surfer showed this kind of promise. Another aspect that I have found in Surfer is her tendency to run in a straight line. Even on flat even ground, most Tollers tend to "banana". I attribute this to the herding dog in them, and not my training as the Labs and Golden have run straight lines. Surfer, even thru cover or terrain attempts naturally to run straight. These abilities she has passed on to Flare, her son, and other puppies in her first litter.

In the show ring Surfer is a very flashy eye catching bitch. She has excellent correct size and bone. At the 2002 NSDTRC (USA) Nationals she was Best Bred By Exhibitor, defeating the male who had much more coat, and maturity. Surfer finished her AKC CH from the Bred By Exhibitor Class. She has three majors: a five point major and two three pointers. She also defeated the boys twice to win Best of Breed.

But Surfer's best and most shining venue is obedience. So far she has her CD title in three trials with THREE FIRST Placements including the 2006 NSDTRC USA National. I have not had a REAL obedience competition dog for many years. Oh yes I have done quite well, Flash has an AKC All Breed High in Trial, and I have client dogs that have taken High in Trial honors at Toller "classics" as well as many class placements with my own and client dogs. But a consistent high scoring dog would go all the way back to Teal and my Shelties. As I got more involved in the field, I did less in obedience and it takes a certain kind of temperament to be a true obedience competitor.

Alas, at 8 years of age Surfer's eyesight begain to fade, and I retired her from competition. She lived in our home full time until she passed on.

Surfer's two litters of puppies did Exceptionally well in Agility, as well as in the field, conformation ring, obedience, and as therapy dogs.
