Honey Available for Placement in a Forever Home
Honey, Sweet As Honey was a TRI (Toller Rescue Inc) rescue Toller that I rescued just north of Kingsville Texas in 2009, she is about 7 years old now. It is difficult to say if she is pure bred. She is a very close mix. Honey was fully vetted, spayed, microchipped and put on Heartworm preventative. I did her obedience training. She did not get along with females, but males were fine. We placed her with an older couple with a small male dog.
Then disaster struck. Honey and her little friend were eating dinner and he decided to check out Honey’s food. Honey bit him. While if the dog has been bigger it would have not been a big deal, the little dog lost his eye. Honey began acting very protective when strangers were on the other side of the fence and tried to nip the obedience instructor. However this instructor let them stay in the class, so this was simply a small incident, but the instructor never gave the owners the training they needed to let Honey know that how she was acting was completely unacceptable, or the family was not able to be assertive enough with Honey. So she was returned to me. Because she had offered to bite, TRI could not re-home her with a more assertive home, so she has been with me. Latter after I re-trained her, I had a retriever-training client who used to walk into my dog exercise area, and Honey if out would run up and only wanted to be petted. She did not even bark. Honey is not as physically sensitive as some dogs are, so sometimes it takes more correction then one would think. Because of my situation with a small female rescue “Muffin” and assorted “Porch Cats”, Honey has been relegated to the kennel which is not fair to her.
Honey is not a really active dog, happy to lie around (especially the couch), very lady like. She likes nothing more then to sit and be petted and loved. She is a very gentle, and docile dog in that way. You can trim her nails, brush her, open her mouth. Never a problem. I have never had a problem with her and my male Tollers, and she absolutely loved it when I had a younger male Lab to rough house and play with. She loves to swim and explore the shoreline, but does not retrieve much.
Honey’s ideal home would be with a family that does not have young children. Teen-agers, especially boys would be great. The family has to be able to take control, and not allow Honey to run the house. Male dogs, at least Toller size would be a good doggy companion for her. No cats or other loose smaller animals. Honey is not a jumper, or interested in going anywhere, but the preference due to her protective tendencies would be a solid fence. She would also be fine in a condo or apartment. I prefer to place Honey in the DFW area where the forever family can come out and meet her, and work with me for a 4-week period after placement.
Also PLEASE consider adopting a Rescue Toller from Toller Rescue Inc.!
